6 November, 2010 – Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia.  Orangutans, the ginger haired great apes from Southeast Asia, will be the focus of attention during Orangutan Caring Week, November 7-13, 2010. This annual celebration will provide opportunities for the public around the world to learn more about this endangered species. Concerned organizations and individuals will be hosting events highlighting the orangutan, their role in the rainforest environment of Borneo and Sumatra, and their struggle to survive rainforest destruction.

Bogor, West Java, Oct 18: The uncertainty is finally over for three homeless orangutans which had been thrown into a limbo of bureaucratic delay and become the center of an international controversy. They are now in the care of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) at a special facility following their transfer from an Indonesian government holding compound. The release had been held up for several days while plans were made to accommodate their needs in the new location.

1 October 2010 - Santa Monica, CA. While activities for President Obama’s upcoming November trip to Indonesia are being planned, Board members of the Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF) are recommending to White House and Indonesian Presidential advisors that the pair of presidents participate in a televised tree-planting ceremony to highlight the importance of Indonesia’s role in nurturing the “lungs of the earth.”  OURF President Gary Shapiro stated that, “forests are not only habitat for Indonesia’s great red apes, but vital ecosystems that sustain all life on earth, including humanity across the globe.”  The symbolic gesture of planting trees somewhere during President Obama’s visit to Indonesia would complement the recently announced US-Indonesian Comprehensive Partnership which encompasses bilateral activities in education, trade and the environment.

16 September 2010 - Santa Monica, CA. The Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF) received notification from the United States Fish & Wildlife Department it received a grant award of $34,896 under the Great Ape Conservation Fund. With the federal funding and additional matching support from OURF and the Australian Orangutan Project, OURF and its sister group OUREI Indonesia will purchase and manage the MECU (mobile education and conservation unit), a 4-wheel drive pickup. The MECU will enable conservation educators of the Orangutan Caring Club of North Sumatra to access villages along the border of Gunung Leuser National Park for the purpose of reducing human/ape conflict through education.
