OrangoTango2012Your pledge will help rescue orphaned orangutans, build enclosures, protect habitat, restore rainforest, provide food for orphans, and release orangutans back into the wild!

Rapid deforestation is occurring across the world and the habitat of the orangutan is disappearing in huge swathes across Borneo and Sumatra.

As part of the worldwide Orangutan Caring Week, The Orangutan Project today launches ‘Orango Tango’, a national fundraising campaign designed to build a critical mass of concerned voices to focus attention on the species through the efforts of public supporters. Orango Tango will run until June 30, 2013.

The campaign has been launched to address the worldwide destroying of orangutan habitat, which is bringing the imminent extinction of the species closer to reality.

Supporters are invited to participate in the user-driven campaign, where they have the option of making a pledge to raise funds towards one of The Orangutan Project’s on-the-ground projects. Funds raised will enable more resources to be allocated to where they are desperately needed in order to protect remaining forest and care for the thousands of orphan orangutans that end up in care centres.

“Now more than ever the orangutans and remaining habitat need our support, to prevent the large scale destruction occurring by palm oil companies across Sumatra and Borneo,” says Leif Cocks, President of The Orangutan Project.

The Orangutan Project is seeking to raise another $740,000 of funding to increase its work in the next year. Participants are able to setup their own personal page and invite supporters to join their quest!

It’s TIME to Orango Tango!

The orangutans need US NOW! There is NO time left for them, so there is NO time to lose, make your pledge and raise your funds from now until June 30, 2013.

Get your school, workplace, friends or family involved. You can raise funds for your pledge in any way you like. Your pledge will help rescue orphaned orangutans, build enclosures, protect habitat, restore rainforest, provide food for orphans, and release orangutans back into the wild!

The second birthday of orang utan baby.

Employee of the nutrition and zoology department and basic schools leaded by Mgr. Jana Rehorova prepared a fruit cake, a present and enrichment for little orangutan female. Baby girl Tessa was born on 13th November 2010; her mother ‘s name is Zaneta. She is living in the Bird World House together with her mother and her brother Besar.  During the celebration, Mgr. Michal Podhrazsky talked about orang utans keeping in the zoo and Ing. Tomas Hajnys talked about nature conservation in South-Eastern Asia. Ing. Ales Kancnyr wished all the best and some of the 45 participants tried a knowledge quiz “What do you know about orang utans?” The event was held as a part of Orangutan Caring Week campaign of Orang Utan Republik Foundation in cooperation with numerous associations, including EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria). The aim of the campaign is to inform general public about destruction of rain forests – natural habitat of both orang utan species – which can lead to their quick extinction.

-Bio Facts table with an orangutan and gibbon skull, gibbon hand, hopefully an orangutan hand, and printouts of orangutan hands and feet. This will allow the ZooTeens to talk about the arboreal nature of orangutans and how their specialized hands and feet make them so adept at moving through the trees. The teens at this table can also highlight some of the tool use observed in orangutans as well as the intelligence required to make tools and problem solve.

-A, "How Do You Measure Up" activity where guests can compare their arm span to that of an orangutan. We've got a big orange fuzzy shirt with arms that, when suspended from two poles, will allow guests to stand in front of it, hold out their arms, and see how they "measure up."

-An activity titled, "Let's Put Orangutans Back in the Forest." One of the ZooTeens is going to draw a forest on some butcher paper and using our orangutan stamps; kids can help 'put the orangutans back in the forest.' If they do that they then get a sticker of Michael as a reward! Again, this activity can be used to describe the plight of wild orangutans.

-A table will be dedicated to the palm oil crisis. We've got brochures for guests that highlight which products or manufacturers don't use or use sustainable means when it comes to palm oil use. We'll also have posters printed out highlighting the palm oil crisis and the effect it's having on wild orangutan populations.

-A "Make an Orangutan Diet" station. Here kids can put together what they think an orangutan's diet consists of. We'll also have a poster printed out showcasing what orangutans eat in the wild. Melanie is also buying a Durian fruit.

Don't forget - Orangutan Awareness Week takes place from Monday 12 November - Sunday 18 November, with our ever-popular Orange for Orangutan Day falling on Wednesday 14 November.

This is your annual opportunity to ‘go orange’ to raise vital funds for the Orangutan Foundation, and the sky really is the limit when it comes to how to get involved. From cake sales, face painting, hair dying and fancy dress to taking a bath in baked beans...it really is up to you!

Our dedicated supporter, The Body Shop Foundation, has very kindly donated three huge 'orange' hampers for the winners of the following categories:

"Most Fundraised Income"

"Most Inventive Use Of Orange"

"Most PR Generated"

...a great incentive to inject some zesty orange into your day and get involved!

Check out our website for more ideas about how to take part and to download our Orange for Orangutan Day posters to advertise your event.

...and why not show your support with one of our fantastic pin badges (pictured left) for just £2.50, available from our online shop.

So remember to take photos, keep press clippings / weblinks etc. and most of all, have fun! Let us know what you're up to on Twitter @OrangutanFndn and Facebook.

And finally...don't forget that all funds raised from Orange for Orangutan Day can be doubled for free if you donate them online in December as part of the Big Give Christmas Challenge. More details to follow soon.
