Orangutan Caring Club Promoting After School Lessons
March 2010 - Medan, Sumatra. In the converted driveway and garage of the office of the Orangutan Caring Club of North Sumatra (CPOI-Sumut), over 160 primary school children have learned about orangutans and rain forests along with English, math, computer and reading skills as part of CPOI-Sumut's innovative private lesson initiative. Started in early 2010, the after school private lessons provide a way for the local residents to better understand the mission of CPOI-Sumut and enhance their children's education and skills. Young college graduates and experienced educators volunteer their time to provide these extracurricular programs to the local youth.

Conservationists do 'Deal with the Devil' to Save Orangutans
November 16, 2009 - By Lewis Smith/The Independent. Agreement sought with palm-oil industry to create ape-saving forest corridors
Wildlife campaigners have made "a deal with the devil" in a bid to save the orangutan from being driven into extinction. They have teamed up with the palm-oil industry, widely condemned by conservationists for causing devastation to orangutans.
But palm-oil companies and the Sabah state government in Borneo have agreed to a project to create wildlife corridors that will link forest areas and create a network of safe havens. They signed up to the pilot scheme last month in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo, and will meet again this month in London to try to agree final details. There are hopes the project can be expanded. Dr Marc Ancrenaz, director of the Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Project, agreed the alliance between conservationists and the palm oil industry was like a pact with the devil but said the green lobby had to be pragmatic in its hopes of saving the red ape.
