AHF Partners with OURF for Special Scholarship to Enhance Veterinary Program in Banda Aceh
25 May 2011 - Santa Monica, CA - The Animal Health Foundation of California (AHF) announced a new partnership with the Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF) to support needy veterinary students in Aceh, Sumatra. AHF will provide the funding for special scholarships within the OURF’s Orangutan Caring Scholarship program. The competitive awards, given to different students each year will cover the cost of tuition during the students’ four years of college and the final year of internship leading to a practicing veterinarian.
The competitive Orangutan Caring Scholarship (OCS) has been one of OURF’s main education programs in Sumatra where the organization has been collaborating with the Yayasan Orangutan Sumatra Lestari-Orangutan Information Center (OIC) for the past six years. OIC promotes and oversees the program in-country while OURF seeks fiscal support for the program. OURF President Dr. Gary Shapiro stated, “The Orangutan Caring Scholarship program is an investment in long-term orangutan conservation by supporting talented students who will advocate for orangutans as professionals.”
2011 Orangutan Caring Scholarship Recipients
16 March 2011 - Medan. The Orangutan Caring Scholarship (OCS) is a joint program of the Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF) and Yayasan Orangutan Sumatra Lestari's (YOSL) Orangutan Information Center (OIC) for the purpose of providing financial support for talented and needy college students and to engender their appreciation and advocacy for the orangutan during and after their academic studies. Since awarding its initial scholarship in 2006, the highly competitive OCS has increased in stature in N. Sumatra and Aceh. Six previous recipients have already received their bachelor degrees. This year, students from biology, forestry and veterinary school competed once again for 10 scholarships. Those scholarships were awarded in a ceremony attended by Dr. Gary Shapiro (OURF) and Panut Hadisiswoyo (YOSL-OIC) on March 16, 2011.
Orang Utan Republik Education Initiative Indonesia Receives MECU Vehicle in Official Ceremony
11 March 2011 – Jakarta. The showroom of the main Ford Indonesia dealer in Jakarta was the site of the official “key presentation” ceremony from Ford Indonesia to the Orang Utan Republik Education Initiative Indonesia (OUREII). The event was an opportunity for the Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF) to explain to the local press the importance of the US-federally funded program it received and to thank the Indonesian and foreign supporters who provided matching funds or services to the Mobile Education & Conservation Unit (MECU) program. OURF President Dr. Gary Shapiro and MECU Grant Manager Dan Benveniste were in attendance from OURF.
JP Taylor Launches "Make a Difference" to benefit Orang Utan Republik Foundation
22 January 2011 - Santa Monica, CA. Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF) has been raising funds to benefit the conservation education initiatives in North Sumatra for several years. Now, singer/songwriter JP Taylor, has produced a downloadable album, "Make a Difference" as a way to benefit OURF and its programs. One of the songs, "Being an Orangutan", was a collaborative creation by writer/professor Shawn Thompson ("The Intimate Ape") and JP Taylor.
