Education Consortium Delivering Curricula in Sumatra to Reduce Human-Orangutan Conflict
August 6, 2007 – Santa Monica, CA. - In villages and classrooms across the provinces of North Sumatra and Aceh, thousands of villagers learn about the ecological role played by orangutans in the nearby rainforest. They also hear about the national laws that protect this endangered species and the consequence of hurting or killing orangutans. With funding from the Orang Utan Republik Education Initiative (OUREI) and led by group of educators from the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program (SOCP), Sumatran Orangutan Society (SOS), Fauna and Flora International (FFI) and the Orangutan Caring Club of Indonesia (CPOI), local Indonesian people are being educated in a variety of ways to reduce the degree of conflict between the local people and this endangered arboreal ape.
Dr. Barita O. Manullang Appointed Executive Director of OUREI Indonesia
July 12, 2007 - Santa Monica, CA. Dr. Barita O. Manullang, one of Indonesia’s most experienced conservationists and conservation educators has been appointed Executive Director of Orang Utan Republik Education Initiative Indonesia (OUREII), the newly created Indonesian branch of the Santa Monica-based Orang Utan Republik Education Initiative (OUREI). OUREI has a mission of securing the future of wild orangutans through empowering Indonesians to educate and inspire local people to care about the plight of the species, one of Indonesia’s natural treasures.
OUREI Announces Incorporation in Indonesia
July 1, 2007 - Santa Monica, CA. The Orang Utan Republik Education Initiative (OUREI) has established itself as a legal non-government organization in Indonesia to expand its efforts to save orangutans through education and other programs. Called OUREI Indonesia, the all-Indonesian group is based in Jakarta and is lead by OUREI Ambassador Angelina Sondakh, OUREI Co-founder Inggriani Shapiro, and businessman Soedomo Mergonoto. The new organization has been structured according to the latest legal requirements for NGOs in Indonesia and will operate in conjunction with OUREI.

Aceh governor bans logging indefinitely in tsunami-devastated province
June 6, 2007 - BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP): The new governor of Indonesia's tsunami-ravaged Aceh province declared a moratorium on logging Wednesday as part of efforts to develop a new long-term forest management strategy.
Irwandi Yusuf said all logging would be banned indefinitely.
