OUREI Acknowledges Current and Former Recipients of Scholarships and Fellowships
August 17, 2008- Medan, Sumatra. During an Indonesian Independence Day dinner held at a seaside restaurant with members of OUREI's inaugural Sumatran Ecotour, former and current recipients of the Orangutan Caring Scholarships and the LP Jenkins Fellowships were honored and acknowledged for their academic achievements and efforts to better understand the orangutan. Seven of the eight recipients of the Orangutan Caring Scholarship (OCS) were in attendance as well as three of past and current LP Jenkins Fellowship recipients.
The five 2008 OCS recipients received certificates signed by the officials of both administering organizations, Sumatran Orangutan Society (SOS) and OUREI. The certificates also specified the conditions to be met by the recipients who will have four years of paid tuition at either school of biology or foresty. The 2008 recipients were: Teddy Panggabean, Sidahin Bangun, Nurzaidah Dalimunte, Fifi Willyanti, and Muhammad Marliansyah.

The dinner also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the scientific work of former and present recipients of the LP Jenkins Memorial Fellowship: David Dellatore (2007), and Panut Hadisiswoyo (2008) and Gail Angela Campbell-Smith (2006 & 2008).
OUREI volunteer Ania Krawiec, a member of the ecotour, was also acknowledged for her significant contributions to OUREI. Finally, members of SOS and the Orangutan Caring Club of North Sumatra were in attendance and provided the attendees with an overview of their respective programs. Both SOS and Orangutan Caring Club, (the latter supported by OUREI), conducts education programs in schools as well as promotes Orangutan Caring Week in Indonesia.
The dinner provided an opportunity for OUREI's partnering organizations to be recognized and to share their knowledge with the ecotour participants.
