6 March 2015- Seminyak, Bali- OURF held its first Indonesian fundraiser, 'Voices for the Jungle", in Bali on March 6 at Warehouse 82 in the Seminyak area. A lot of effort went into preparing for the event but the rain couldn't be kept away during the time leading up to the evening event. Consequently, turn out was lower than had been projected. Nevertheless, everyone who attended appeared to have a good time as they were entertained and educated about the orangutan and its plight.
Thanks go out to Henrica Tramboo, our talented event coordinator who worked hard for many months to bring together many of the expats in Bali as well as numerous sponsors from various hotels, restaurants, and services. Our emcee, Tenaiya did a great job announcing the various presenters and performers as well as the raffle draw at the end. DJ Day provided audio services and music throughout the night, and the staff of Warehouse 82 were great.
We were happy to provide a venue for the Bye Bye Plastic Bag team from the Green School who let everyone know about their project to collect signatures to ban the sales of one time use plastic bags- something now commonplace in other parts of the world. They had their table area where they spoke to guests about their program and performed a short skit for the assembled crowd. Dr. Ian Singleton provided a moving video and information about the situation facing orangutans and the threatened Leuser Ecosystem in Aceh, Sumatra. OURF President Gary Shapiro introduced an audio soundscape of the forest and orangutans. And the Circus Bali performers amazed the audience with their skillful acrobatics using fire and hoops.
The Orangutan Republik Foundation's Indonesian partners, OUREII attended the event and brought a dozen orangutan paintings for the attendees to consider purchasing. They also provided attendees with information about their upcoming ecotours to Central Kalimantan in May. They will be the recipients of the funds raised during this event.
OURF would like to thank the numerous sponsors who provided items and services to the success of the fundraiser including: Nina at Warehouse 82 for providing the venue, Thai Airways for a round-trip ticket from Bali to Bangkok; Kapal Api for serving coffee and providing goodie bags, Miracle Clinic for multiple vouchers for skin care treatment; to Doug Fretty for providing the weekend getaway in Bedugal, Bali; Art of Bali for multiple dance classes; Glo Spa for a voucher for beauty treatment; Rumah Desa for providing an authentic Bali home visit experience; East Bali Cashews for providing quality cashew nuts for guests to enjoy; Bali Asli for homemade jams and soaps for the raffle draw; Warna Printing for free and discounted printing services; Bali Bird Park for multiple tickets to their nature facility; Unique Collection, Breezes Bali and Hard Rock Hotel for quality accommodations; Orangutan Odysseys for a discount voucher for one of their quality ecotours, Inggriani Shapiro for a week stay at the Red Ape Retreat in Kuta, Bali; Circus Bali and Pole Studio Bali for their performance; Shelter, La Flavela and La Plancha for lunch and dinner vouchers; to Panomatics and Indonesia Travel in 360 for support, and thanks go the Yak Magazine, Indonesia Ex-pat Magazine, and Bali Advertiser for promoting the event throughout Bali and Indonesia.
Funds raised were from a composite of a nominal entry fees, raffle tickets, silent auction purchases, and sales of various items. If you intended to participate in the Bali fundraiser but couldn't attend, OURF encourages you to make your donation as it is through the generosity of donors can the various education programs and projects be conducted.
